"Amelia" is a beautifully photographed film but it's also emotionally disappointing. It's a two-hour puff-piece about a legendary figure in aviation, produced by and starring Hilary Swank.

Swank plays Amelia Earhart, the first woman to make a solo Trans-Atlantic flight. Earhart remains a mysterious historical figure who died when her plane disappeared in the Pacific Ocean near the end of a "around the world" flight in 1937.

Richard Gere plays Amelia's aloof husband and promoter. Ewan McGregor also stars, as a fellow pilot and Amelia's romatic-trist.

Little of Earhart's tumultuous life matters in this travelogue movie, the emphasis is always on the pretty pictures. Don't get me wrong, it's a noble film, and a nice film, but entirely too safe to be a legitimate bio-pic. As a piece of cinematic history, it only skims the surface in paying homage to those early ladies who risked their lives for the love of flying.
